Apple with the win.. in some areas..
So today Apple held its annual WWDC announcement in San Jose where Tim Cook kicked off the conference talking about the great success of all the amazing developers (16 million) of all ages. The youngest being 10 and oldest being 82! I actually remember sitting in my Algebra 2 class at The University of Akron following a live blog when they announced the App Store. I also remember sitting one of my jobs watching the App Store hit their 1 Billion download. It’s crazy how time flies by.
Now, down to business…
Tim Cook announced that Amazon Prime video will be launching later this year.
The number 1 (yes number 1 now) selling smartwatch is getting updates to its big hit smartwatch. Apple has created a Siri watch face that updates and reminds the user of traffic, reminders, sunset/sunrise times, and even has HomeKit Controls.
There’s even new watch faces that includes a kaleidoscope and Toy Story character faces.
They’ve even updated their activity app to track mph also, for those that need that type of feature.
That’s about it when it comes to watchOS, nothing too crazy, but nice to see that Apple is finding ways to make it better along the way.
macOS High Sierra
Yes… the new macOS name, macOS High Sierra. Definitely could have got a little more creative with this one. I think i even like the El Capitan name better than this one.. Hell they could have called it macOS Lady Bug and I would have liked it better.
Here is some of the highlights of what macOS High Sierra brings to the table:
- Safari has autoplay blocking for video on websites.
- Photos app is revamped, reorganized, new editing tools and filtering options.
- New APFS and Metal 2.
- In layman’s terms, new hardware and software optimizations that will give great performance.
Developers BETA currently out now, followed by the public beta later in June.
The last time the iMac line was revamped was in 2014, so this was for sure a long time coming. However, at the end is where we get a HUGE surprise!
For 2017, Apple has finally updated the internals and gone along with newer processors, more RAM, and more.
Apple has announced that on newer 27″ iMacs that they get 2x Thunderbolt 3/USB-C Ports. Another big announcement is that they are working on VR for the higher end iMacs.
Now for pricing!
Now for the surprise! Just watch…

Every year this event is always where we look forward to seeing what Apple will be doing with iOS. Today they announced some new features that will make iOS even better than what is already a great platform.
iMessages is now getting a redesigned app drawer, and also getting Apple Pay integrated into it. Now you can start sending mobile payments peer-to-peer in iOS 11.
Memories can now recognize pets, and Live Photos is getting improvements.
Siri will have a beta for language translation.
Apple Maps is adding a few improvements as well. There’s going to be detailed floor plans for some malls, and major airports. Lane guidance and speed limit postings will also be added.
To help with promoting safe driving, they’re also adding in a “Do Not Disturb While Driving” feature to help with safe driving.
The Control Center is now going to be all on one screen, which I find very helpful, but I think they need to do more with the buttons. Only updates over time will tell what they do, but I like this a lot!
iOS11 Coming this Fall for Free.
New iPad Pro 10.5″ and 12.9″
Apple has been in dire need to find a direction with the iPad. Multiple sources have said they have no interest in making in a Surface Pro-like device. So then what do you do?
Like all new Mac products, you make them faster, thinner, and lighter. The new iPad Pro is only 1 pound, 30% faster CPU performance, and 40% faster graphics performance. All this is done with the new A10X chip.
Cameras have also been updated.
Same 10-hour battery.
We even have new DONGLES!
A new feature we have with new iPad is the Drag and Drop feature!
iOS 11 Control Center on the new iPad Pro.
The new Files App.
The new iPads are available now.
Did Apple just mention there’s ONE LAST THING?!
The long rumored, soon to be rival to the Amazon Echo and Google Home. Apple HomePod is a 5.5 pound speaker that has Siri integrated into it. It can play your playlists, give you weather conditions, news, translate, and much, much more!
Apple thrives on their craftsmanship and quality of their products, and this is going to be a very well put together product.
Inside the speaker is an A8 chip that is powering the speaker, along with 7 tweeters that are built for precision and directional control.
All this technology built into one tiny speaker can output tremendous sound.
HomePod – Coming December
Apple is really stepping up their A game when it comes to audio! This is something that I might buy into. I’ve held off on others, but we shall see.
Today Apple also announced some minor changes which I didn’t touch on. Those items were: Apple Music, Apple Pencil, VR/AR, and AirPlay 2 (can now play in multi rooms). I didn’t want to go too far into detail with these since they were minor.
I hope you enjoyed this wrap up from Apple WWDC17! Be sure to check out Apple’s website to get more information.
